Strengthening Indiana one community at a time

The Indiana University Sustaining Hoosier Communities initiative forges partnerships with local communities and leaders and Indiana University’s faculty, students, and staff to improve and enrich the health, prosperity, and vitality of our region.

Sustaining Hoosier Communities nurture a diversity of individuals, identities, and perspectives, and enjoy the benefits of a strong social fabric and civic engagement. These communities demonstrate a long-term commitment to their people, economic opportunities, and places.

Student involvement

Impact Indiana communities while you gain invaluable academic experience at IU. Engage in thought-provoking work that addresses needs and opportunities of our Hoosier neighbors. Sustaining Hoosier Communities courses span the disciplines and carry credit you can apply towards your degree.

Faculty partners

You will give your students high-impact learning opportunities while addressing real-world issues when you partner with the Sustaining Hoosier Communities program. SHC will assist you as you connect with community leaders and their projects and arrange travel associated with your course.

Your course will be offered through the schedule of classes at IU Bloomington as part of your regular teaching load. There will be a new faculty learning community established for SHC instructors, and SHC staff along with the existing instructor resources at the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning will be available to assist as you develop your course.

Sustaining Hoosier Communities represents just one of many types of community engagement initiatives Indiana University is undertaking through the Center for Rural Engagement to improve the well-being of Soutwest Central Indiana and its residents.
